Don't blow it - good planets are hard to find.
‘Environment’ is a familiar term. It's everything that makes up our surroundings and affects our ability to live on the earth—the air we breathe, the water that covers most of the earth's surface, the plants and animals around us, and much more.
Sadly, over the years, we have taken advantage of the environment’s resources, exploiting them for our own selfish needs. Here’s a startling fact-
The Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years. Scaling this time down to 46 years we have been around for 4 hours and our Industrial Revolution began just 1 minute ago. During this short time period we have ransacked the planet for ways to get fuels and raw materials, have been the cause for the extinction of an unthinkable number of plant and animal species, and have multiplied our population to an enormous extent. Our clean water supply is also at risk and more and more of our beautiful, open spaces are disappearing as new buildings and factories are built. This rightly explains the term environmental degradation.
Shocking, yes, but that is the truth.
But why is our environment so important? Simply put, it is the only home we have. Our well-being depends solely on the well-being of the environment. It is important to take care of our environment because that means healthy surroundings to live in. It also ensures fresh air to breathe and clean water to drink. What is harmful to the earth is ultimately harmful to humanity.
Many experts believe that we can reverse some of the harm the planet has suffered. The challenge is getting enough people to take drastic action so that we can make a difference in our lifetime.
As humans with responsibility, we need to ensure to keep our planet clean. I mean, look around you! Almost everywhere we can see trash. Cigarettes, aluminum cans, bottles, wrappers... Will this trash ever come to an end? One important way we can save the planet is by recycling. By recycling, we can reuse our planets resources and begin to transform it into what it once was.
Another major environmental problem is pollution. Everyday, we send tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, only causing more global warming. If you haven't noticed already, the ice caps in the poles are melting. The reason? Well, mostly pollution. All these gases being released into the air are increasing the earth's overall temperature, therefore melting what should be frozen. We can reduce pollution by carpooling, which cuts the carbon dioxide emission by half. Or we could even walk to nearby areas. Not only will this help keep our planet cooler, it will also benefit us as we’d get some exercise everyday. If we really work hard, we can make a difference in our lifetime.
Another easy thing to do to help save this planet is to be conscientious about what you are doing. Are you turning out every last light as you leave the room? Are you making sure to take shorter showers? All this can definitely make a difference.
You may think that you alone cannot make a difference, and that this planet is doomed, but what if everybody thought that, and never did anything about it? Everyone has the potential to make a difference. If you just get a group of people to feel motivated, this could start something big for the earth.
So as a conclusion to all of this, take the extra step to make sure that you go green, and help save the planet! After all, we only have this one island home, and once it's gone, it's gone.
Some tips to get you started…
Green Tips - How can we save the planet?
· Use reusable grocery bags while shopping for grocery.
· Turn off appliances when you are not using them.
· Use the windows to regulate the temperature. Keep them closed in winter to prevent loss of heat. Open the windows in summer so that the fresh breeze cools the room. This way we do not need to use heaters or air conditioners to regulate the temperature of the room.
· Use energy- efficient appliances.
Let us all work towards achieving a cleaner, greener and better Earth!

STUNNING FACTS
- 1% of Australia’s untapped geothermal power potential could provide enough energy to last 26,000 years. Sure, we’ve got a long way to go before we’re actually able to use that energy, but the fact that such energy is available paints a much brighter picture of our energy future, especially since geothermal power is one of the lowest priced forms of renewable energy.
- Within 10 years, wind power could provide 20% of America’s power.
- If you use a low-flow showerhead, you can save 15 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower.
- By turning off your computer instead of leaving it in sleep mode, you can save 40 watt-hours per day.
- If all households in the U.S. paid their bills online and received electronic statements instead of paper, we'd save 18.5 million trees every year, 2.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and 1.7 billion pounds of solid waste.
